When, why and how it was created

BioWare built Dragon Age: Origins as a large-scale fantasy role-playing game centered on party tactics, character relationships, player choice and multiple playable origin stories. It established Thedas, the Grey Wardens and many of the people, conflicts and institutions that continue through the later games.

A new fantasy setting

BioWare built Origins as an original dark-fantasy world centered on party tactics, relationships, dialogue and difficult choices.

Background as narrative

The six origin stories make social position and race part of the opening narrative rather than only character stats.

Party tactics

The PC edition emphasizes tactical camera control and programmable companion behavior; console editions adapt the same systems to controllers.

Franchise foundation

Origins established Thedas, the Grey Wardens, Ferelden, the Fade, darkspawn and institutions that later installments revisit.
